The damage caused by unpatched software exploits has been immense. A 2020 survey conducted by the Ponemon Institute found that 42% of the respondents that were breached stated that the breach was caused by a known, unpatched vulnerability. The good (and bad) news is that many software-related hacks could easily have been prevented with proper patch management.
