DO-IT-YOURSELF CELLULAR IDS
LMG’s researchers created the world’s first proof-of-concept cellular intrusion detection system (CIDS), which enable enterprise security professionals to detect hacked smartphones cheaply and effectively, even in BYOD environments. For less than $300, LMG created a CIDS by modifying a Verizon Samsung femtocell and redirecting traffic to a server running the open-source intrusion detection software. LMG then infected a smartphone with the Android.Stels malware and developed custom-written rules to detect it.
On the Internet, every action leaves a mark–in routers, firewalls, web proxies, and within network traffic itself. When a hacker breaks into a bank, or an insider smuggles secrets to a competitor, evidence of the crime is always left behind. Our founders built LMG’s “Play Lab” to run cyber experiments and create the world’s first textbook on Network Forensics (Prentice Hall, 2012).
